Elijah!

Bailey Gordon - Wednesday, September 29, 2010

Canterbury Choral Society opens its 2010-2011 season this Saturday with a performance of Mendelssohn's Elijah.  This classic piece has been inspiring audiences for 150 years, and it will continue to do so on Saturday.

The performance will begin at 8 pm at the Civic Center in downtown Oklahoma City. Mendelssohn's Elijah is traditionally sung in German, but Canterbury will sing it in English. In addition to the amazing chorus, the performance will feature four outstanding soloists and accompaniment by the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.

Tickets are on sale now - get information on how to purchase here.  Speaking of tickets, did I mention that they are 2-for-1 with your OKCityCard?  You must purchase them in person at 428 W. California, Suite 100 (Canterbury's office) in order to get the discount.

Stay in the know about the rest of Canterbury Choral Society's season by visiting http://www.canterburyokc.com/.  You can also find Canterbury on Facebook and follow them on twitter @CanterburyOKC.

Love's Labours Lost

Bailey Gordon - Tuesday, September 28, 2010
The Oklahoma City University School of Theatre is opening its 2010-2011 season this weekend with William Shakespeare's Love's Labours Lost.

Marked as one of Shakespeare's wittiest comedies, this play boasts the story of four men who give up food, drink and women for the sake of fame. Shakespeare throws a twist in the plot by introducing four women into the story in order to test the promises of the men and keep the audience on their toes.

Love's Labours Lost will be showing in the Burg Theatre on OCU's campus at 8:00 pm this Thursday, Friday and Saturday with matinee performances on Saturday and Sunday.  And don't forget to take your OKCityCard with you! It will get you 2-for-1 tickets to the show.

We're lucky to have TheatreOCU right here in OKC. The program houses some of the most talented college students in the country.  I was blown away by the last OCU production I saw! If you haven't been to OCU in a while, you should definitely check out Love's Labours Lost!

It’s the last weekend in September. Is it just me, or has this month just flown by? It’s probably because there are so many great things to do – time flies when you’re having fun!  Speaking of fun, it’s time to mention some of this weekend’s arts events. It’s the last weekend for Carpenter Square Theatre’s Leading Ladies (I’ve heard great things) and this is the only chance you’ll get to see OVAC’s unique art show and sale, 12X12. 12X12

Bailey Gordon - Wednesday, September 22, 2010

This Saturday, there is an art show that you won't want to miss. Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition (OVAC) is hosting their annual 12X12 exhibition and sale at the Fred Jones Industries Building in downtown Oklahoma City.

For one night only, this historic warehouse will serve as a gallery for the work of 150 Oklahoma artists. What's more, you won't find a work that is larger than 12-by-12 inches. In addition to viewing and puchasing art, guests will sample food from 32 area restaurants and enjoy live music.

The fun doesn't stop there! Stop by the after-party in the 9th Street District. Your 12X12 ticket will get you special ofers at Iguana Mexican Grill, Sara Sara CupcakesPachinko Parlor and Shop Good. Can't beat that!

12X12 is one of OVAC's biggest fundraisers of the year. The money OVAC receives through the show will support statewide programs such as curated exhibitions, grants, professional development workshops, young artist events and crucial publications. In 2009, OVAC raised more than $60,000 through the event.

Click here for tickets and more information about the event. I hope to see you all there!

Celebrate the Arts This Weekend

Bailey Gordon - Friday, September 17, 2010
Although this will be the last blog on National Arts in Education Week, you can continue celebrating through the weekend!  As always, there are numerous opportunities in Central Oklahoma to explore the arts for the younger set, and the young at heart.  Be sure to check out these great activities:

If you’re in Bricktown on Saturday evening, look out for Justin Witte singing the blues and jazz.  He’ll perform from 5-7 pm courtesy of the Arts Council of Oklahoma City’s Out of the Box program.

Beginning today through October 9, Individual Artists of Oklahoma hosts an exhibition of new artworks by Tulsa artists, Mazen Abufadil and Laurie Spencer. There will be an opening reception tonight from 6-9 pm at the IAO Gallery.

Take a short drive to Shawnee and view their current special exhibit “Andean Dreamers: Pre-Columbian Inca Textiles” at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art.  The museum is offering free admission until September 30.

On Saturday, drop in the Oklahoma City Museum of Art’s Education Center to make “Fantastic Frescoes.”  From 1-4pm, guest artists will work with families to create their own masterpiece through the museum’s Drop In Art program which is free with paid admission to the museum.

I hope your celebration of National Arts in Education Week has been as fun as ours! Keep advocating the importance of arts education and its life-changing power.
