The Place to Be This Weekend - Festival Family Activities

Lindsay McIntyre - Friday, April 23, 2010

From the Thunder to the Festival of the Arts to the Memorial Marathon, there is so much excitement in OKC right!

This weekend is definitely THE WEEKEND to be downtown. And what better place to hang out then at the Festival of the Arts?

There are so many family-friendly activities happening at the festival, below are just a few of the must-do’s and must-see’s for you and your family:

• Creation Station lets everyone create a work of art. Children and adults can participate in this larger-than-life, interactive art exhibit.

• At the Young-at-Art Mart Festival artists sell original works of art priced from $.50 to $5.

• At the Children's Art Field children can complete three art projects for $2. The projects include: Spirit Sticks, a creative wand or stick that children can decorate, Fling a Ring Thing, a glider made of straw and card stock that soars through the air, and Filtered Art, marker art on coffee filters that become small paintings when sprayed with water.

• The Community Arts Showcase tent features artwork made by children across the city in the Arts Council of Oklahoma City's Arts After School program and artwork made by teens from the Teen Advisory Council.

• See live art demonstrations and learn about the creative process behind making art at Artful Experience.

• Another popular attraction is Pottery Place. Children and adults select, create, and fire a pot or vase using the ancient Oriental technique of RAKU. Prices range from $5 to $50.

• And of course, face painting for $1 the north end of the Crystal Bridge.

Most of the above activities are located in the Youth Plaza on the east side of the Myriad Botanical Gardens. And don’t forget – the Festival of the Arts is free to get in!
