Arts in Education - Prairie Dance Theatre

Bailey Gordon - Tuesday, September 14, 2010
In continued observance of National Arts in Education Week, we’ll highlight a few of the many arts education projects supported by Allied Arts.  Here’s just one example of the power of the arts!

"I used to go home after school and watch TV. Now, I dance and play the drums with Prairie Dance Theatre."

With support from Allied Arts, Prairie Dance Theatre provides an afterschool program for underserved students in Northeast Oklahoma City.  Students learn dance and drumming while receiving nutritious snacks and nurturing mentorship from caring volunteers.  They also learn the value of teamwork as they work together toward a common goal, an end of year performance, and gain confidence in their creative abilities.  Parents of participating students report that they have seen a marked difference in school grades, improved relationships with teachers and family, and a burgeoning sense of pride and accomplishment.

Visit http://www.prairiedanceokc.org/ to learn more about how Prairie Dance Theatre is making a difference!

Drum lessons are a huge hit with the kids!

Storytelling is not what I do for a living - it is how I do all that I do while I am living.
- Donald Davis

Help Turn Up the Volume

Bailey Gordon - Wednesday, September 08, 2010
Don't just turn up the volume. Crank it up. Way up. That's what Canterbury Choral Society's young professionals group, a capella, is doing this Friday night.

Join a capella for Canterbury Karaoke, a time of food, drinks, prizes and (what else?) singing!  The event is this Friday night from 7:30 to 11 on the rooftop patio here at 1015 N Broadway on Automobile Alley.  This rain is supposed to go away and we should have a beautiful night!

The cost is only $10 in advace or $12 at the door and that includes 2 free drink coupons (yes, free drink coupons mean that you must be 21 to enter) and food. All event proceeds will benefit Canterbury Choral Society's technical needs for performances at the Civic Center.

Come on up to the roof this Friday. I'll be here! If you're lucky, you'll get to watch me sing a really embarassing rendition of one of my favorite songs from Glee (I'll admit it - I'm a gleek).

Get your tickets today! Call Jason Grife at (405) 232-7464 to reserve your spot on the roof. For more information, visit http://www.canterburyokc.com/canterburykaraoke.

If you missed the last rooftop party, you missed out! The Red Bull "Art of Can" event was a huge success. Don't these people look like they're having fun? (Photo by Sarah Warmker)

Thursday Night is Pie Night

Lindsay McIntyre - Wednesday, August 11, 2010

The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is hosting an old fashioned pie and ice cream social to honor its members.

Members and their families are invited to the museum for Paintings, Poetry, and Pie at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 12.

Along with gobbling scrumptious pies and ice cream, members will feed their minds during a poetry reading by noted poet and author, Dr. Ben Myers, associate professor of English at OBU.

And, guests will sample a bit of country, a pinch of rock-and-roll, and a nibble of bluegrass while listening to folk-music duo Ed and Karen Pettit of Oklahoma City.

Not a museum member? You can join during the pie social and enjoy the festivities. Family memberships begin at $50. You can also join online at www.mgmoa.org/membership.

The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art is located on the campus of St. Gregory’s University, 1900 W. MacArthur St., Shawnee.

For more information about this event or museum membership, please contact Tonya Ricks at tsricks@mgmoa.org or 405-878-5604. For general information about the museum, please visit www.mgmoa.org or call 405-878-5300.

Mabee-Gerrer is one of Allied Arts fabulous member agencies. We're proud to have them in the Allied Arts family!

Anyone know who produced the above pie painting? Props to whoever comments with the answer!
